What I do

About

Carolyn Sundlof Boudreau is a Chicago-based lyric mezzo-soprano and crossover vocalist, equally at home in classical, jazz, musical theatre, and her own songwriting. With deep classical roots and a love for new music, she moves easily between the concert hall, the opera stage, the cabaret room, and the classroom.

What ties it all together is a belief that art is for everyone. Across nearly two decades in music education, much of her work has been helping people who don’t yet see themselves as artists discover that they are. Whether she is captivating an audience or coaxing a nervous student through a first solo, she is after the same things: resilience, confidence, and joy.

Carolyn Sundlof Boudreau is a Chicago-based lyric mezzo-soprano and crossover vocalist, equally at home in classical, jazz, musical theatre, and singer-songwriter repertoire. With a particular love for new music, she has premiered works on both the opera and concert stage.

A seasoned chorister, Sundlof Boudreau spent nine seasons with the Chicago Symphony Chorus, where she performed on the recording of Verdi’s Requiem under Riccardo Muti that won two 2010 Grammy Awards. She has also sung with Music of the Baroque, the Grant Park Music Festival, and the professional new-music ensemble Stare at the Sun.

On the opera and theatre stage, Sundlof Boudreau originated the role of Voice, the only sung and spoken character, in the stage premiere of Flannery Cunningham’s Groundwater at Thompson Street Opera, an ensemble work shared equally with a dancer and instrumentalists. Her credits also include Jenny in Sondheim’s Company, Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance with Great Lakes Operetta, and an appearance with Chicago Opera Theater as Wren #3 in the stage premiere of The Life and Death(s) of Alan Turing. She is also a music director, a songwriter, and the creator of Her Story, Her Notes, a project celebrating the art song of women composers; its debut album, The Voice We Inherit, with pianist Erica Mueller, is forthcoming.

An educator with nearly two decades of experience and an Illinois-certified K–12 music teacher, she believes art is for everyone. Carolyn Sundlof Boudreau is a member of AGMA.
